Software Update Server

2 February 2011

Software Update offers a quick & easy way to update machines. It works perfectly with small networks of a few machines but updating larger networks is time-consuming. Software Update Server (SUS, part of Mac OS X Server) automatically downloads updates to your server and stores them ready for use. By pointing your local machines to the SUS, rather than to Apple, updates come from your own server and download speeds are blisteringly fast

Initial setup of SUS is quick and configuration of the user machines is even quicker. Out-of-the-box, SUS will only serve updates up to the version of Mac OS X server you are using. So if you have 10.5 Server and 10.6 clients you will want to upgrade the server or hack the setup
